March 20 : World Storytelling Day
World Storytelling Day is an annual event celebrated on March 20th, for promoting the art of oral storytelling around the world. The holiday was first established in Sweden in 1991, and has since spread to over 25 countries.
The theme of World Storytelling Day changes each year, and is chosen by the International Storytelling Network. The theme for 2023 is "Tales of Resilience: Stories of Strength and Perseverance."
The importance of storytelling in human history cannot be overstated. Long before the invention of writing, humans were using oral storytelling as a way of passing down knowledge, traditions and beliefs from one generation to the next. Storytelling has also been used as a form of entertainment, as well as a way of creating a sense of community and shared culture.
In today's world, with the rapid increase of technology and mass media, it's easy to forget the power of a good story told in person. But storytelling is still an important part of many cultures and events like World Storytelling Day help to keep this tradition alive.
There are many different forms of storytelling. From traditional folktales and fairy tales to personal stories and anecdotes. Whatever the form, storytelling allows us to connect with each other on a deeper level and to share our common experiences and emotions.
To celebrate World Storytelling Day, many communities organize storytelling events. Where people can come together to listen to stories and share their own. These events can take many different forms. From small gatherings in private homes to large festivals and performances in public spaces.
So why not take some time on March 20th to listen to a story, or share one of your own? You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it and how much it connects you to the people around you. After all, as the saying goes, "we are all stories in the end."
